Alumni Gathering: Leading from the Back

Alumnus Charles Lee (MDiv 2024) organised an alumni gathering on Mon 18 Aug 2025 with the theme: Leading from the Back (text: Mark 9:30-37; James 3:13-16).

Dr Mark Chan, TTC’s Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology, was invited to address the gathered alumni.

Though the session was short, it was a welcome, refreshing break and a good chance for alumni to catch up with each other.

The talk synopsis:
The insidious encroachment of the world into church life calls for a re-examination of the assumptions we bring to the exercise of Christian leadership. Jesus’ countercultural view on leadership provides an alternative model. The session will probe the following: What is the place of ambition in ministry? What happens when we scramble to be first? What does leading from the back look like? How does this impact the way we look at ourselves? And what blessings come to us when we lead from the back?
