Synopsis

The Christian doctrines of election and deification are troubling ones for many of us. Election commonly conveys the notion that God has chosen some for salvation and others for condemnation. How can a just and righteous God do this? Are there other ways of understanding this doctrine? Deification literally means we lowly human creatures “become God”. Is this not blasphemy? How are we to understand this doctrine that has been taught by great theologians since the period of the early church? We will, in this course, explore these two “troubling” doctrines and consider how they speak to our life and ministry today.
