Biography

Mark L. Y. Chan is the Earnest Lau Professor of Systematic Theology. He was formerly the Director of the Centre for the Study of Christianity in Asia (CSCA), a research arm of TTC as well as editor of the Centre’s publication, Church & Society in Asia Today (2007-2013).

Mark teaches mainly in the areas of hermeneutics, homiletics, and the intersection between Theology and contemporary thought. He is author of Christology From Within and Ahead: Hermeneutics, Contingency and the Quest for Transcontextual Criteria in Christology; and his edited works include: Beyond Determinism and Reductionism: Genetic Science and the Person; The Quest for Covenant Community and Pluralist Democracy in an Islamic Context; A Graced Horizon: Essays in Gospel, Culture and Church; and others. He has also published in various multi-essay volumes and academic journals.

Prior to joining the faculty at TTC, he served with Eagles Communications as its Resident Theologian and Executive Vice-President (1979-2005), as well as honorary preaching pastor for Evangel Christian Church (1981-2011). He was a member and deputy head of the Lausanne Theology Working Group (2005-2012), as well as a member of the Alexandra Hospital Research and Ethics Committee (2001-2004). He is currently serving on the Ethics Committee of Farrer Park Hospital (2014 -).

Mark worships with his wife Sophia at Covenant Community Methodist Church.
