Synopsis

Human beings have always been preoccupied with the idea of transcending our existing limits. Today, modern medicine has afforded us longer lives and technology might even help us overcome our physical limits through cybernetic augmentation. Of course, we see this idea of transcendence most poignantly with the rise of Artificial Intelligence, which comes with the promise of greater efficiency in productivity in all that we do. At the heart of it, we live with the philosophy that we can live without limits and work without limits. But are human beings really meant to be limitless? In this course, we will try to address this question through the lens of biblical theology, particularly through the first pages of Genesis. We will first explore reading Genesis 1-2 with attention to its literary artistry and ancient Near Eastern context. Thereafter, we will attend to how Scripture encourages us to be wise about our limits in both space and time.

Biodata

Rev Ian Lee has been a Methodist pastor since 2013 and is currently pastoring at Wesley Methodist Church. From 2021-2023, he studied at Regent College, Vancouver, where he completed his Master of Arts in Theological Studies, focusing on the Old Testament.
