Psalm 130: 3-4<\/strong><\/p>\n 3 If iniquities you watch over, Yah, WHO COULD STAND? <\/strong><\/p>\n Often, I unwittingly take Lent as a way to restart my failed New Year\u2019s resolutions:<\/p>\n But this poor attitude belies a competitive and legalistic spirit beneath, one that looks at others to see whether they are as spiritual as I am and finding glee if they do not match my standards. However, the psalmist notes a universal truth in v. 3, \u201cIf iniquities you watch over, YHWH, my Lord, who could stand?\u201d Augustine notes in his commentary on the Psalms that the emphasis is not on the self, that is, on whether I myself<\/em> could stand but on who<\/em>, because \u201c[the psalmist] saw that the whole of human life on every side was ever bayed at by its sins, that all consciences were accused by their thoughts, that a clean heart trusting in its own righteousness could not be found.\u201d Surely if God were to hold my pitiable attempts at righteousness against his, I would not stand a chance at mere existence!<\/p>\n Thankfully, the psalmist goes on in v.4 that with God there is forgiveness! In the Hebrew text, \u201cforgiveness\u201d is preceded by a definite article \u201cthe,\u201d personifying God\u2019s immutable attribute, one that does not wax nor wane. It is because of his forgiveness that I can stand secure, no longer bowed down by iniquity.
