Microfilm readers are now often equipped with electronic scanning features. the reader is connected to a computer.  Images can then be scanned to tif or pdf files, and can be emailed or downloaded to USB drives.  They then can be converted (or bundled) into one djvu file. Lizardtech offers a free programme (Djvu Solo 3.1) for creating djvu files for non-commercial use.
