Professor
Roger E. Hedlund is a teaching missiologist engaged in academic research through
the Mylapore
Institute for Indigenous Studies. At present he directs the
DICTIONARY OF
SOUTH ASIAN CHRISTIANITY Project which is a major international effort to
produce a one-volume reference work of 1000 pages on the various facets of
Christianity of all the major Christian traditions in seven or more countries.
In addition he serves as managing editor of Dharma Deepika, A South Asian
Journal of Missiological Research and is involved in producing academic
publications and textbooks for seminaries and colleges.
He is author and compiler of 16 books, most of them published in India, as well
as of academic papers, articles, research monographs and reviews. One recent
book, Quest For Identity: India¹s Churches of Indigenous Origin, The 'Little
Tradition' in Indian Christianity, published in 2000 at Delhi, the outcome
of a post-doctoral book-writing research grant, focuses on indigenous
Christianity in India. A major textbook, Missiology for the 21st Century:
South Asian Perspectives, co-edited with Paul Joshua Bhakiaraj, was released
in 2004 from Delhi.
The Hedlunds arrived in India in 1974. Roger taught missiology at the Union
Biblical Seminary, Yavatmal (now Pune), 1974-1978, and served as professor of
mission research at Serampore College, 1994-1997. From time to time he lectures
in other training institutes in South Asia and as visiting professor of South
Asian Studies at Fuller Seminary.
Roger Hedlund's academic credentials include degrees in theology and missiology
from Denver Seminary and Fuller Theological Seminary including a Doctor of
Missiology from Fuller and a PhD from the University of Madras, India.
Roger is married to Thea June (List) Hedlund who assists in computer technology
and other ministries including music and teaching. They have two children, Karl
S. Hedlund (North Carolina) and Lisa R. Roberts (Springfield, Oregon), seven
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
