A Brief Introduction by Michael Poon
Tianfeng (Heavenly Wind) Magazine is the chief exponent of the official views of the Chinese church. Its reports and analyses are hence of immense value towards the understanding of the Chinese church; in particular, in the crucial period from 1947-1963.
This compilation of the Tianfeng Magazine Index 1947-1963, oddly perhaps is the first compilation to be available to the public, should be of immense value for scholars interested in the development of the contemporary Chinese church. The importance is underlined by the relative lack of research in the contemporary period, especially in mainland China. The Tianfeng articles charted the concerns of the church--as it severed its ties with foreign mission boards and took up its political and social tasks--in the turbulent periods following the founding of the new Republic, to the years immediately before the Cultural Revolution, when the publication became sporadic and finally ceased. The Index is based on the five rolls of microfilm (ATLA Film AS0317) in the ATLA Serial Preservation Programme. They are available in Trinity Theological College Library. As some issues were missing in the microfilms, the Index lies incomplete. The 1947-1956 Index was compiled by a first-year student Yang Guoqun and his wife Fang Aiqin under my guidance in July 2005; I finished the indexing for 1957-1963 with the assistance of Library assistants.
Tianfeng Magazine republished in 1980. Back copies and current issues are available in Trinity Theological College Library.
